Post-Surgical Massage & Scar Tissue Management

Surgery places significant stress on the body, and healing takes time. Every recovery process is different. Post-surgical massage therapy and scar tissue management can help support recovery by addressing swelling, tension, mobility restrictions, discomfort, and changes within the surrounding tissues after surgery. Treatment is always adapted to your stage of healing, comfort level, and individual needs. Whether you are recovering from a joint replacement, orthopedic surgery, abdominal procedure, C-section, breast surgery, or another surgical intervention, care is approached thoughtfully and respectfully.

Supporting Healing & Scar Mobility

Scar tissue formation is a normal part of healing. As the body repairs tissue, scars and surrounding structures can sometimes become restricted, sensitive, or uncomfortable with movement.

These changes may contribute to:

  • tightness or pulling sensations
  • reduced mobility or stiffness
  • discomfort with movement
  • numbness or sensitivity
  • tension in surrounding muscles and fascia

Post-surgical massage and scar massage therapy do not “break apart” scar tissue aggressively. Treatment instead focuses on supporting tissue mobility, circulation, nervous system regulation, and overall comfort throughout recovery.

Depending on healing timelines and medical clearance, treatment may include:

  • gentle manual therapy
  • myofascial techniques
  • lymphatic support approaches
  • mobility-focused treatment
  • desensitization techniques
  • surrounding muscle treatment
  • movement and self-care education

Treatment should never feel forceful or aggressive.

A Personalized Approach to Recovery

Recovery after surgery is not always linear. Pain, swelling, stiffness, and compensation patterns can change throughout the healing process and may affect other areas of the body as well.

My approach focuses on working within the body’s current capacity while supporting recovery safely and gradually. Treatment is individualized and adjusted as healing progresses.

Important Considerations

Post-surgical massage may not be appropriate during every stage of healing, and some situations may require physician or surgeon clearance prior to treatment. Fresh incisions, active infections, blood clot concerns, and certain post-operative complications may require postponement or modification of care. If you are unsure whether treatment is appropriate for your recovery stage, you are welcome to reach out prior to booking.

Common Areas of Support

Post-surgical massage therapy may support recovery following:

  • total knee replacement
  • hip replacement
  • shoulder surgery
  • abdominal surgery
  • C-sections
  • orthopedic procedures
  • breast surgery
  • laparoscopic surgery
  • traumatic scars or injuries
