Post Surgical Massage & Scar Tissue Management

Surgery places significant stress on the body — physically, mentally, and emotionally. Healing takes time, and every recovery process looks a little different.

Post surgical massage therapy can offer supportive care during various stages of healing by helping address tension, swelling, mobility restrictions, discomfort, and changes within the surrounding tissues.

Whether you are recovering from a joint replacement, abdominal surgery, orthopedic procedure, C-section, or another surgical intervention, treatment is always approached thoughtfully, gently, and with respect for the body’s natural healing process.

Understanding Healing After Surgery

Scar tissue formation is a normal and necessary part of healing. As the body repairs tissue, collagen is laid down to help close and stabilize the area. In some cases, the scar and surrounding tissues may become restricted, sensitive, thickened, or adhered to nearby structures.

These changes can sometimes contribute to:

  • feelings of tightness or pulling
  • reduced mobility
  • discomfort with movement
  • altered posture or compensation patterns
  • sensitivity or numbness
  • tension in surrounding muscles and fascia

Massage therapy does not “erase” scars or aggressively break tissue apart. Rather, treatment focuses on supporting mobility, tissue glide, circulation, nervous system regulation, and overall comfort throughout recovery.

What Post Surgical Massage May Help Support

Treatment may help support:

  • scar mobility
  • tissue flexibility
  • swelling and fluid movement
  • surrounding muscular tension
  • stiffness and mobility restrictions
  • body awareness and movement confidence
  • relaxation and nervous system support
  • comfort during the healing process

Every treatment is adapted to the stage of healing, the type of surgery, and the individual needs of the client.

Scar Tissue Management

Scar tissue management involves gentle, appropriate techniques intended to support mobility and reduce restrictions within the affected area and surrounding tissues.

Depending on healing timelines and medical clearance, treatment may include:

  • gentle manual therapy
  • myofascial techniques
  • lymphatic support approaches
  • mobility-focused treatment
  • desensitization techniques
  • surrounding muscle treatment
  • education around movement and self-care

Pressure and techniques are always adjusted based on tissue tolerance and comfort. Treatment should never feel forceful or aggressive.

A Collaborative Approach to Recovery

Healing is rarely linear.

Recovery after surgery can sometimes feel frustrating, uncomfortable, exhausting, or emotionally overwhelming. Pain and restriction do not always follow a predictable pattern, and it is not uncommon for the body to compensate in ways that affect other areas as well. My approach is centered around listening carefully to the client, working within the body’s current capacity, and supporting recovery without forcing change. Treatment is individualized and may evolve over time depending on how healing progresses.

Important Considerations

Post surgical massage is not appropriate at every stage of healing, and certain conditions may require physician or surgeon clearance prior to treatment. Fresh incisions, active infections, blood clot concerns, and certain post-operative complications may require postponement or modification of care. If you are unsure whether treatment is appropriate for your stage of recovery, you are welcome to reach out prior to booking.

Common Areas of Support

Post surgical massage may be beneficial during recovery from procedures such as:

  • total knee replacement
  • hip replacement
  • shoulder surgeries
  • abdominal surgeries
  • C-sections
  • orthopedic procedures
  • traumatic scars or injuries
  • breast surgeries
  • laparoscopic procedures

Treatment plans are always individualized and adapted to your specific needs and recovery goals.
